A Little Catch Up
A little weekly catch up is in order today...somehow I have managed to start a bunch of projects at the same time and I just haven't taken the time to write about it...so here goes!
Outside my window
That blanket of snow that I thought we would be stuck with is all but melted. Thank you Jesus for seasons. I hope that we paid our dues and milder days will stick around until Spring but we will see I guess. It's messy and wet and gross outside but it's 57 degrees today. The air smells fresh and it just makes me so so happy...oh, and it doesn't get dark now until after 6 which is big progress too.
Bird counting
Last weekend I learned about the Great Backyard Bird Count so I downloaded the app and was so excited to spend some time counting some birds and you know what? I had none. All the winter birds have gone and most likely since the snow is melting the birds are our foraging for their food instead of my feeder. Luckily the app has a listening feature so I was able to pick up some birds in the distance. So my count was a bust but I am sure they will return someday soon.
In the kitchen
I love old recipes and I have been on the search for them. This past weekend for Valentines Day I made a Depression Cake and I topped it with Caramel Icing and we were so excited to have a special treat for a couple of days. It doesn't take much to make us happy.
I decided to have a go at baking fresh baked sourdough bread again. I did this a couple years ago and my daughter took over. It has been nice getting her wonderful baking from time to time but I decided I wanted to jump back in. I bake about a loaf a week and this was my first in a long while.I have not really stuck with my meal planning idea. Perhaps I'll give it another try next week.
What I am reading
I am stuck in the 1940's this year, I love reading the way things were...I usually have one book I am reading and one book that I am listening to at the same time so that if I am sitting or in the car I grab my phone and read and if I am working in the kitchen or sewing or whatever else I can listen. It keeps me engaged and I just love it.
Current reads...Of Windmills of War by Diane Moody (its a series and its fabulous) and my Current listen...The Secret Midwife by Soraya Lane (its deep and sad but I wanted to remember Auschwitz)
In my Bible I am still in Genesis and also Matthew. I am slow I cannot speed read through my Bible it's just not me.
What I am working on
Last week my daughter and I had an order of 5 dozen cookies for the cutest little Valentine baby shower so that kept us busy most of the week.
Joyce, so many good things here! I haven't jumped on the sourdough train, but it reminds me of years back when I was doing the Amish Friendship Bread. Do you remember that? I was up to having about 6 loaves in my freezer and I finally had to stop feeding the starter :) I was running out of people to give the bread to! And...you might have just solved the mystery of why I haven't had as many birds in the backyard lately. I guess they are out finding their own food these days. The count app sounds like fun though! I'm so glad you're blogging again! I love catching up with you :)
